Objectives

We wanted to use this session to help the YIC to better understand more about apprenticeships at Northern Gas Networks, the types of opportunities currently available, and the importance of apprenticeships. it was key for the panel to understand the current challenges that Northern Gas Networks is facing with its apprenticeship offering e.g., struggling to recruit for certain roles, lack of diversity, and to get the YIC’s perspective on the kind of apprenticeship offering that they think would attract people into ‘difficult to hire’ areas e.g., data, technology, finance, legal.

Fluid apprenticeships

You said that NGN should offer more roles with no guaranteed permanent role, and also apprenticeship roles that provide the opportunity to experience different areas of the business.

We have now added a commitment to our business plan, where we will recruit 5 fluid business admin apprentices over GD3.  These will be the first apprentices we have had who will move around departments and get broader experience, and we feel this will support our graduate schemes by giving us insight into what works well etc.
